PM Modi In Mauritius for Two-Day Trip, to Attend Celebrations of National Day, And Inaugurate Major Projects

Before he left, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed hope that the visit will bring about a "new and bright" chapter in India-Mauritius ties.

PM Modi In Mauritius for Two-Day Trip, to Attend Celebrations of National Day, And Inaugurate Major Projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Mauritius on March 11, 2025, on a two-day state visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The visit is a reflection of the long-standing historical and cultural relations between the two countries and seeks to enhance bilateral relations in all sectors.

While in visit, PM Modi will attend Mauritius's 57th National Day festivities as chief guest on March 12. The Indian Defence Forces contingents, accompanied by an Indian Navy vessel, will also participate in the events to mark strong defense cooperation between the nations.

Besides visiting the national day celebrations, PM Modi will also inaugurate more than 20 India-funded projects, which signify India's commitment to Mauritius's development. Most importantly, he will inaugurate the new Civil Services College building jointly with PM Ramgoolam. The institution, constructed at an estimated cost of USD 4.75 million, is meant to improve governance and institutional capacity in Mauritius. The basis of this partnership was laid with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2017.

Also underlining India's contribution towards grassroots development, PM Modi will also e-inaugurate the Area Health Centre and 20 community projects in Mauritius. These include crucial infrastructure in areas ranging from healthcare to local development and sports, involving a total investment of approximately Rs 7 crore.

The visit is also of strategic importance, as it comes in the wake of recent events involving the Chagos Archipelago. The United States has signaled support for a Mauritian-British agreement on the fate of the U.S.-British military facility in the Chagos Archipelago. India has traditionally supported Mauritius's claim over the islands and welcomes the U.S. presence in the Indian Ocean to counterbalance Chinese influence. The settlement of the Chagos sovereignty question is welcomed by New Delhi as being in line with its strategic interests in the area.

This visit is PM Modi's second to Mauritius as Prime Minister, the first being in 2015. It is a demonstration of the continued commitment of both countries to deepen their abiding friendship and cooperation for the development and prosperity of their people, as well as for security and development in the Indian Ocean Region, in accordance with India's vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
