Reports Say Petro’s Name Appears in Drug-Trafficking Probe, He Denies Allegations

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has denied allegations after reports said his name appeared in ongoing US investigations.

US Investigations Mention Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro; No Charges Filed

Colombian President Gustavo Petro is under investigation in the United States on drug charges.

The US is currently at war with Iran. Earlier in January 2026, the US 'kidnapped' Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from his own country. He was then taken to America and arrested. Colombian President Gustavo Petro could be Trump's "next Maduro", according to a media report. Actually, the Trump administration has started an investigation into 2 criminal cases in the US. Gustavo Petro's name has come up in this investigation. It is being speculated that Trump is now eyeing the Colombian leader.

According to the report of the American newspaper New York Times, the name of Colombia President Petro is coming up in the ongoing investigation in the US. However, Petro is not directly the target of these investigations. This investigation is going on regarding drug-trafficking in Latin America. But according to the report, U.S. attorneys in Brooklyn and Manhattan are investigating whether Petro met with drug-traffickers. And did he take donations from them for his 2022 presidential campaign?

However, President Petro has issued a statement denying these claims. He further said that he has always told his campaign managers never to take donations from bankers or drug smugglers. He argued that the ongoing investigation in the US would eventually prove his innocence. He blamed Colombia's right-wing opposition for provoking the controversy. President Petro said that the ongoing action in the US will help him disprove the allegations of Colombian far-rightists, who actually have deep ties to Colombian drug traffickers.

However, there is no concrete evidence that the White House has initiated such an investigation against Petro. Trump and Petro have spoken on the phone several times this year. The two had also met recently. But Trump has criticized Petro in the past. He has even described them as 'sick men'. In such a situation, it is being said that Trump can take advantage of the ongoing drug trafficking investigation in the US to influence the Colombian presidential election. Apart from this, they can put pressure on Petro so that Colombia will cooperate more with the United States.
