Geneva: Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), the global media safety and rights body, condemned the murder of digital journalist Nazar Muhammad Kanrani in the Jaffarabad locality of Balochistan in western Pakistan. The resident of the Sohbatpur locality was shot dead on 4 August 2026 by an armed man in the Ladies Market area of Dera Allahyar town. Kanrani (40), an office bearer of Awami Press Club Sohbatpur, received multiple bullet injuries and died on the spot. The police have already arrested a suspect (identified as Hafiz) and continued the investigation.
“We in PEC express concern over continued attacks on scribes in South Asian nations, where the culprits usually get immunity from the political clouts. Pakistan lost 5 media workers to assailants last year, and Nazar Muhammad Kanrani became the second media professional this year to date (the first being Lala Israfil Khan of the HUM News channel). Globally he becomes the 43rd victim since 1 January 2026,” said PEC president Blaise Lempen.
