Australia was defeated 3-2 by the Indian men's hockey team in their most recent group encounter. For the first time in 52 years, the Indian hockey team has defeated Australia in the Olympic Games. India was through to the semifinals already.

In their final group stage match at the Paris Olympics 2024, the Indian men's hockey team faced Australia. Australia lost 3-2 to India. In the encounter on August 2 (Friday), India's goals came from Abhishek in the 18th minute and captain Harmanpreet Singh in the 13th and 33rd. The Kangaroos' goals came from Thomas Craig in the 25th and Blake Govers in the 55th.

After fifty-two years, the Indian hockey team beat Australia in the Olympic Games. Since the Munich Olympics in 1972, India has never before defeated Australia in an Olympic competition. The Indian squad achieved a significant victory. India had advanced to the semifinals earlier.

India scored two goals in the first quarter of the game. A field goal was scored by Abhishek. A counterattack resulted in the goal. Lalit Upadhyay first moved into the D and went around the Australian defense. Next, Abhishek scored by flicking the ball in Charter's direction. India then led 2-0 after Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner.

In the second quarter, Australia rallied thanks to a penalty corner goal from Thomas Craig. India took a 3-1 lead in the third quarter thanks to a penalty shot made by captain Harmanpreet Singh of India. Excitingly, the Australian squad gave it their all in the final quarter to try and win the game. Even though Blake Govers scored in the 55th minute on a penalty kick, it was insufficient to either win or tie the game.

The Indian squad defeated New Zealand 3-2 in its opening game to win the Olympic medal in Tokyo, its first in 41 years. After that, they tied 1-1 with Argentina. India defeated England 2-0 in the third game. However, they were defeated 1-2 by Belgium, the defending Olympic champions.
