24 Burnt Alive as Mob Sets Hotel on Fire in Bangladesh; Hindu Homes and Temples Targeted in Escalating Violence

A day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the nation due to a brutal crackdown on a student-led movement, economist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus was selected to head the country's temporary administration on Tuesday night.

The violence appears to be part of a broader pattern of attacks against Hindu homes and temples across the region. In the past 24 hours, several Hindu-owned properties and places of worship have been vandalized, looted, and set ablaze. The situation has left the Hindu community in a state of fear and uncertainty, with many fleeing their homes in search of safety

In a tragic escalation of violence, 24 people were burned alive after a mob set fire to a hotel in southeastern Bangladesh. The incident, which took place late last night, is the latest in a series of violent attacks that have targeted the minority Hindu community in the country.

Doctors at Joshor General Hospital verified they had counted 24 dead in the Zabir International Hotel in a frightening incident, but hotel workers who were still alive worried there might be more bodies under debris.

A Hindu organization in Bangladesh, meanwhile, asserted that after Sheikh Hasina's overthrow, hundreds of Hindu homes, places of business, and temples have been vandalized.  About 8% of Bangladesh's 170 million people are Hindus, and historically, they have tended to favor Hasina's mostly secular Awami League party rather than the opposition coalition that includes a hardline Islamist party.
