Due to damage at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city last week, three top Kolkata Police officers including two ACPs have been suspended. A mob broke into the state-run hospital's seminar hall a few days after a trainee doctor was raped and killed there. It damaged the pharmacy, nursing station, and emergency room.

The Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court harshly criticized the Kolkata Police, accusing them of failing to keep the crowd under control.  The Supreme Court questioned the police on Tuesday over several matters, such as their inability to safeguard women and doctors during the mob attack and their delay in submitting the FIR and giving the victim's family access to the body.

A bench led by India's Chief Justice, DY Chandrachud, stated that if women are unable to work safely, the nation will be depriving them of their right to equality.  The court further noted that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, attempted to misrepresent the murder as a suicide.  The bench also questioned the police about how they allowed criminals to enter the hospital, which was a scene of ongoing criminal activity.

The suspension of the three officers is being seen as a necessary step towards restoring public trust in the police force, but many believe that more needs to be done to ensure justice is served. As the investigation continues, all eyes remain on the authorities to see how they handle this sensitive and high-profile case.
