Maruti Suzuki Hits the Gas in India: 30 Million Cars and Counting

Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) has etched its name in automotive history, achieving a remarkable production milestone – 30 million vehicles manufactured! This accomplishment not only marks a shining chapter for MSIL but also cements India's position as a powerhouse in global car manufacturing.

In a significant announcement, Suzuki Motor Corporation declared India as the second nation, after Japan, to achieve this impressive feat. Notably, India achieved this milestone at a record-breaking pace – just 40 years and 4 months since production commenced in December 1983. This surpasses the 55 years and 2 months it took Suzuki to reach the same benchmark in its home country.

The journey began with the iconic Maruti 800, a car that revolutionized personal mobility in India. Manufactured by the then Maruti Udyog Ltd, a joint venture between Suzuki and the Indian government, the Maruti 800, with over 29 lakh units produced, played a pivotal role in achieving this landmark achievement. Other popular models like the Alto, Swift, Wagon R, Dzire, and Baleno have also been major contributors to MSIL's success story.

MSIL's unwavering commitment to 'Make in India' is another noteworthy aspect of this achievement. The company boasts manufacturing facilities in Gurugram, Manesar (Haryana), and Hansalpur (Gujarat), catering to both domestic and international markets. MSIL proudly contributes nearly 40% of India's total vehicle exports, highlighting its significant role in the nation's economic growth.

Confident about India's burgeoning passenger vehicle market, projected to be the world's third largest, MSIL has charted an ambitious growth trajectory. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of MSIL, outlined their plans to invest further and expand their annual production capacity to a staggering 4 million units by the 2030-31 fiscal year.

To achieve this ambitious target, MSIL will establish two new greenfield manufacturing plants, each with a capacity of 10 lakh units, in Kharkhoda, Haryana and Gujarat. Additionally, they aim to broaden their product portfolio, increasing the model range from the current 18 to an impressive 28 by FY 2030-31. This expansion strategy reflects MSIL's dedication to catering to the evolving needs and aspirations of Indian car buyers.

Maruti Suzuki's India success story serves as a powerful testament to the nation's potential as a global manufacturing hub. The company's unwavering commitment to quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction has been instrumental in achieving this remarkable milestone. Looking ahead, MSIL's planned investments and production capacity expansion promise to propel India's automobile industry even further onto the global stage.
