SM Krishna, Visionary Leader and Former Karnataka CM, Dies at 92

SM Krishna, a veteran Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away at the age of 92 at his residence in Bengaluru. A towering figure in Indian politics, Krishna was renowned for his instrumental role in transforming Bengaluru into a global technology hub, earning the city its nickname as India’s "Silicon Valley." According to reports, he had been unwell for some time.

We are deeply grieved by the passing of former Karnataka Chief Minister Shri S.M. Krishna, whose leadership and public service legacy will always be remembered in our state and country. Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge said on X, "His vision and dedication influenced Karnataka's success and his corporate attitude towards governance for Bengaluru endeared him to many."

His goal of establishing Bengaluru as a worldwide city continues to pay off today. In addition to mourning the passing of a significant political person, we also commemorate a life well lived in service of the populace. "May his accomplishments continue to inspire future generations and may his soul rest in peace," Priyank Kharge continued.

From 1999 to 2004, SM Krishna served as Karnataka's chief minister. From 2004 to 2008, he served as Maharashtra's governor. In 2017, Krishna broke with the Congress and joined the BJP, but he maintained a modest political presence. From 2009 to 2012, he also held the position of External Affairs Minister in the United Progressive Alliance administration led by Manmohan Singh. In 2023, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan at Rashtrapati Bhavan in recognition of his work in public affairs.

Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed him as a "remarkable leader," while Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized Krishna’s lasting contributions to the state’s growth. Andhra Pradesh’s N Chandrababu Naidu remembered him as a leader who always prioritized public welfare.

Krishna is survived by his wife, Prema, and two daughters, Shambhavi and Malavika. His passing marks the end of an era for Karnataka and India, where his contributions will be cherished for generations to come
