Rekha Gupta Becomes Delhi’s New Chief Minister, BJP’s Surprise Pick Takes Oath Today

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the party's return to power in the national capital after 27 years. Gupta, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Shalimar Bagh, is set to be sworn in today at a ceremony in Ramlila Maidan, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries in attendance.

Born on July 19, 1974, in Julana, Haryana, Rekha Gupta's political career commenced during her academic tenure at Delhi University. She was elected as the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) for the 1996-1997 term, representing the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Her active involvement in student politics laid the foundation for her subsequent roles within the BJP.

Rekha Gupta's elevation to the Chief Minister's office is historic, as she becomes the fourth woman to hold this position in Delhi, following in the footsteps of leaders like Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi Singh. Her appointment underscores the BJP's strategy of promoting leaders with strong grassroots connections and organizational experience. Party insiders highlight that Gupta's close ties with the RSS and her active engagement in women-related matters were pivotal factors in her selection.

As she assumes office, Chief Minister Gupta faces pressing challenges, including addressing air and river pollution, enhancing public infrastructure, and fulfilling the BJP's electoral promises of revamping government schools, providing free health services, and ensuring free electricity. Her leadership will be instrumental in navigating these issues and steering Delhi towards sustainable development

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 12:15 PM at Ramlila Maidan, with a host of dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expected to grace the occasion
