The Kishanganj Lok Sabha constituency, also called the Gateway of Northeast, spans 1,884 square kilometers and shares a 114-kilometer border with Nepal. Formerly a sub-division of Purnia district, Kishanganj became a separate district in 1990. It hosts approximately 1.6 million voters, comprising 68% Muslim, 31% Hindu, and 0.34% voters from other communities.
Historically known for jute cultivation, Kishanganj has shifted away from this industry due to mill closures. It stands as Bihar's sole district with tea gardens, covering roughly 10,000 hectares. In the 2019 elections, Congress clinched victory in Kishanganj, with Mohammad Javed securing 367,017 votes, followed by JD(U) candidate Mahmood Ashraf with 332,551 votes.
