Karimganj, located in Assam and bordering Bangladesh with the Kushiyara River as a natural boundary, has a predominantly rural population, with 91.89% of its nearly 20 lakh residents living in rural areas, according to the 2011 census. The election for this constituency was successfully held on April 26th, with a voter turnout of 80.48 percent.
The first Lok Sabha election in Karimganj was held in 1962, as no elections took place in 1952 and 1957. In the inaugural 1962 election, Congress candidate Nihar Ranjan Laskar won by a record 50,525 votes and continued his winning streak for the next five elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Kripanath defeated AIUDF's Radheshyam Biswas in the Karimganj seat.
