Justice Gangopadhyay's Political Leap: To Join BJP, Praises PM Modi
Abhijit Gangopadhyay

New Delhi: Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who recently announced his resignation, has revealed his intention to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with a possible formal entry on Thursday afternoon, possibly on March 7. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Justice Gangopadhyay commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hailing him as a "very hardworking man," and criticized the ruling Trinamool, stating that their actions had "inspired" him to venture into politics.

In his critique, he remarked, "Trinamool is imploding, signifying corruption. PM Modi is a very hardworking man, and he is trying to contribute to the betterment of the country." Justice Gangopadhyay also took aim at other opposition parties, stating, "I believe in God and religion, but CPIM does not, and the Congress is the zamindari of one family."

Justice Gangopadhyay, previously in the headlines for an interview discussing a case he was presiding over, is widely anticipated to be nominated by the BJP in the upcoming general election. Speculation surrounds the possibility of him contesting the Tamluk seat, traditionally held by the Trinamool Congress since the 2009 election, with Suvendu Adhikari, formerly associated with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, having quit in 2016 to join the BJP.

Confirming his resignation earlier in the day, Justice Gangopadhyay stated, "I am going to meet the Chief Justice for a courtesy visit. I have already sent my resignation to the President." He had initially planned a press conference but later mentioned, "It skipped my mind that prohibitory orders are in place. So, I will hold it at my home."
