There are 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in Rajasthan. It is spread over Jalore and Sirohi districts. There are eight assembly segments in the Jalore Lok Sabha constituency. These are Ahore, Jalore (SC), Bhinmal, Sanchore, Raniwara, Sirohi, Pindwara-Abu (ST) and Reodar (SC). The Jalore Lok Sabha seat has been a stronghold of the Congress as it is reserved for the Scheduled Castes. Former Union minister and ex-governor Buta Singh represented Jalore in the Lok Sabha for four terms. There was no major Dalit leader of his stature in the BJP to break Buta Singh's dominance. So in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had fielded former national president Bangaru Laxman from South India as the Dalit face against Buta Singh.
