Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday promised to give one free LPG cylinder to every person during Bihu and Durga Puja. At the time of this announcement, long queues were seen outside cooking gas distributors across the state.
Sarma was addressing an election rally in support of BJP candidate Suraj Dihingia in Mahmora constituency of Charaideo district on Saturday. "In Bihu and Durga Puja, we will give one gas cylinder to the people for free. Mama will pay for these two cylinders.
Other promises on BJP's return to power
The chief minister told the gathering that if the BJP comes back to power, free rice will continue. Along with this, pulses, sugar, salt and mustard oil will also be made available at subsidized rates.
The Congress has reacted strongly to the announcement. Assam Congress media department president Bedabrata Bora termed it a clear violation of the model code of conduct.
Bora alleged that after the election dates are announced, the chief minister's main role is to take care of law and order and disasters. "Legally, they can't announce any new scheme or dates for board exam results, but they are doing it," he said.
