Bhopal: Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath is rumored to be contemplating a switch to the BJP, along with his son Nakul Nath, the current Member of Parliament from Chhindwara. The speculation arose after Kamal Nath held discussions with his supporters in Chhindwara, seeking their opinions on his potential move. Following these consultations, Chhindwara's scheduled programs were abruptly canceled, and Kamal Nath departed for Delhi via Bhopal. Despite these developments, neither Kamal Nath nor his supporters have issued any official clarification on the matter.

The shift in Kamal Nath's political allegiance raises questions about how a prominent figure, once regarded as the political heir to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, found himself on the brink of leaving the Congress party. Despite being chosen as the chief ministerial face for the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, he was unexpectedly removed from the post of Madhya Pradesh President, distancing himself from party activities. Five key reasons contribute to Kamal Nath's apparent dissatisfaction with the Congress.

Firstly, he faced blame for the party's defeat in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, where the Congress secured only 66 seats out of 230, while the BJP claimed 163 seats. Secondly, Kamal Nath was abruptly removed from the post of state president without prior consultation or information, causing resentment. Thirdly, his desire to engage in central politics was unmet, as he remained confined to Madhya Pradesh despite anticipating a return to Delhi after the 2018 assembly elections. Fourthly, Kamal Nath's aspirations to contest Rajya Sabha elections and contribute to central politics were dashed when Sonia Gandhi chose Rajasthan for the candidacy, sidelining him. Lastly, disputes with Digvijay Singh during the assembly elections, particularly regarding ticket distribution, further strained Kamal Nath's relationship with the party. These factors collectively fueled the speculations surrounding his potential switch to the BJP.

However, it is essential to note the political landscape in Madhya Pradesh, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has historically dominated. In the 2019 elections, the BJP swept the state, securing 28 out of 29 seats, while the Indian National Congress managed to win only one seat. According to numerous surveys, the BJP is poised to repeat its success in the upcoming elections. Given the BJP's stronghold in the state and its recent victories in assembly elections, it raises skepticism about the party's interest in welcoming Kamal Nath. The fact that Kamal Nath has not explicitly denied the speculations or showing his willingness to switch does not necessarily imply that the BJP is inclined to accept him and his son into the party. The BJP's strong political standing in Madhya Pradesh may influence their strategic considerations in this matter and may not consider him, given there is no use. The state has already been maxed-out by the BJP as the party is projected to win all the seats even this time.
