"Beginning of the End": Bengal Governor on Shahjahan's Arrest

After nearly 55 days of evading authorities, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh, accused of sexual offenses and land encroachment in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali, was apprehended on Thursday. Sources indicate that Sheikh was captured in the fish farming vicinity of Minakhan. The TMC leader had been on the run since January 5, following an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials conducting a raid at his residence in connection with the ration scam. The arrest came after an extensive search.

Kolkata: West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose expressed satisfaction on February 29, 2024, regarding the apprehension of Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh in the Sandeshkhali sexual assault and land grab case. The governor stressed the urgency of bringing to justice those criminals who wield significant influence in various parts of Bengal. The arrest of Sheikh, who had been evading authorities, occurred during the early hours of Thursday in Minakhan, situated approximately 30 km away from Sandeshkhali.

Speaking at a press conference, Governor Bose stated, "This marks the beginning of the end. We must put an end to the prevailing cycle of violence in Bengal, where certain individuals hold sway. It is imperative to incarcerate these culprits and ensure justice prevails." He further asserted that the Sandeshkhali incident represents just the tip of the iceberg, suggesting that there are deeper complexities beyond what meets the eye.

Reacting to the arrest, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh commended the Bengal police for their efforts in cracking down on the Sandeshkhali accused. Ghosh also urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to arrest BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari and Mithun Chakraborty, who are named in separate FIRs.

In response, West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari dismissed the arrest as a "mutual adjustment," insisting that justice for the people would only prevail if central agencies took custody of Sheikh. Adhikari expressed concern about the facilities Sheikh might receive in jail, claiming he could still control the area from behind bars.
