Bathinda is an assembly constituency in Punjab. The district covers an area of 3,353 square kilometres. Bathinda district consists of 6 assembly constituencies. According to the 2011 census, the population of Bathinda was around 14 lakh. The sex ratio is 868. The district has a literacy rate of 68.28 per cent. The male literacy rate is 73.79 per cent and the female literacy rate is 61.94 per cent.
According to historians, Raja Bhutta settled the city of Bathinda in the forests of Punjab in about the third century. At that time, the Bhati kings had built two forts. Then this city was captured by the Barahos. Later Bal Rao Bhatti again acquired it and named it Bathinda. Then a Sikh named Roop Chand came to Punjab and his son Phool built a fort and started the practice of langar. According to history, Razia Sultan, the first woman ruler of India, was imprisoned in Bathinda.
