The city of Kolkata is simmering with outrage as protests against the recent rape and murder of a young woman have gained momentum, culminating in a massive rally scheduled for today. The incident, which took place earlier this week, has shocked the nation, prompting an outpouring of anger and demands for justice.
Protesters, including activists, students, and concerned citizens, have called for a ‘Maha Michhil’ rally, a grand procession, to march through the heart of Kolkata. The rally is expected to see thousands of participants, making it one of the largest protests the city has witnessed in recent years. The rally will begin at College Square, a historic site known for being a hub of student activism, and will proceed through Esplanade before culminating at the Victoria Memorial.
In the meantime, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) reinforced its call for a federal law to protect physicians and other healthcare providers in a letter to the National Task Force (NTF). The Supreme Court established the NTF with the task of creating a policy to guarantee the protection and safety of medical personnel.
Throughout the city today, the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front (WBJDF) will host free health camps at the Abhaya Clinic. 'Abhaya Telemedicine Clinic' is an initiative that junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital are protesting about.
Weeks after the CBI took control of the investigation into the horrific rape and death of a female doctor, rumors about the change of the crime scene persist because of audio and video leaks. On September 17, the agency will provide a progress report on the inquiry to the Calcutta High Court. The agency just finished administering a second round of polygraph tests to former principal Sandip Ghosh. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is looking into Dr. Ghosh's alleged money laundering as well.
