Amazon has continued its restructuring efforts by reducing jobs in its robotics division, reflecting the company's broader push to streamline operations and improve efficiency through automation and artificial intelligence.
Robotics Division Layoffs and Automation Strategy
According to a Reuters report, Amazon has confirmed that it has reduced roles in its robotics unit, affecting around 100 white-collar employees. The affected team is primarily responsible for the development of robots and automated transportation systems used in warehouse operations.
The job cuts also followed Amazon's decision earlier this year to halt development of the "Blue Jay" robotic arm project. The system was introduced at an event in October, with multiple robotic arms capable of lifting multiple objects simultaneously and designed to assist warehouse workers working in confined spaces.
Extensive workforce cuts across the company
These layoffs are part of a broader workforce reduction program at Amazon. Starting in October, the company launched a major round of job cuts affecting about 14,000 white-collar employees.
Including the subsequent cuts, Amazon has now eliminated nearly 30,000 corporate roles, citing operational efficiency improvements driven by artificial intelligence and efforts to reshape company culture.
Despite the cuts, corporate employees make up only a small portion of Amazon's total workforce, which is about 1.5 million people, most of whom are hourly employees employed in fulfillment centers.
