Powerful 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Nepal, Tremors Shake Delhi-NCR

Delhi-NCR and several North Indian regions, including portions of Bihar, experienced tremors Tuesday morning following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Nepal. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the earthquake struck at 6:35 a.m., 93 km northeast of Lobuche, close to the border between Nepal and Tibet.

People in Bihar were seen outside their homes and apartments as a result of the powerful shocks. There have been no reports of property damage after the earthquake.

As the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge to build the Himalayas, Nepal is located in a seismically active region that frequently experiences earthquakes. Lobuche is located in Nepal, close to the Khumbu Glacier, east of Kathmandu. It is roughly 8.5 kilometres southwest of Everest Base Camp and 150 km from the capital.

Emergency response teams in India and Nepal are closely monitoring the effects of the earthquake. Authorities have asked people to maintain their composure and be ready for any aftershocks.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reports that the earthquake was detected around 6.35 AM (IST) and that its epicentre was 10 km deep and situated at latitude 28.86 degrees North and longitude 87.51 degrees East. It was determined that the tremor occurred in the Tibetan Autonomous Region of Xizang, which is close to Nepal.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with Nepal, assuring assistance if needed. “India stands ready to provide all possible support to our friends in Nepal during this challenging time,” he tweeted.

Citizens in both countries are advised to stay informed through official channels and prioritize safety during any aftershocks.
