Neeraj Chopra was born on December 24, 1997, in Khandra, Haryana, India. He is a pioneer in Indian athletics, especially in the javelin throw. From a village to international athletic stardom, he is a living example of his determination, hard work, and natural ability.


Early Life and Education
Chopra was born and brought up in Khandra, a village in Panipat district. Chopra was sports-minded since childhood. He went to DAV College, where he pursued academics while nurturing his growing passion for athletics. Acknowledging his potential, he then joined Lovely Professional University to continue his studies while developing his sporting skills.
Introduction to Javelin Throw
Chopra's interest in the javelin throw was developed during his pre-teen years.His natural ability for the sport soon manifested itself, and he worked all the harder at it with unyielding dedication. He refined his skill under the guidance of experienced trainers and tutors and rose through ranks at national competitions with breathtakingly rapid acceleration.


Rise to National Prominence
Chopra's moment of triumph arrived in 2016, when he won the gold medal at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, with a world junior record throw of 86.48 meters. This outstanding feat not only demonstrated his vast potential but also identified him as an upcoming star in global athletics.


International Achievement
After his initial success, Chopra continued to dominate the global stage. He took gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, and the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2018 and established himself as one of the world's best javelin throwers.


Olympic Triumph
Chopra's crowning moment arrived at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which took place in 2021 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. He gave a brilliant performance, winning the gold medal with a throw of 87.58 meters. This win not only gave him the honor of being the first Indian to claim an Olympic gold in athletics but also catapulted him to national hero status.


Comeback and Injury
After winning his Olympic medal, Chopra's luck changed and he suffered from injuries that kept him away from playing for periods of time during the 2022 season. Bouncing back, however, he came back strongly in 2023 and regained his rhythm to play at a top level once more.


World Championships and Diamond League
Chopra's consistency and ability were continued to be displayed in his world championship and Diamond League efforts. He was capable of putting himself on the podium time and again, thus proving that he could hold his own with the best of the world's talent.


In November 2024, Chopra made a gigantic shuffle in his coaching committee by hiring Czech great Jan Zelezny as his coach. Zelezny, a three Olympic gold medallist and current men's javelin world record holder, was keen to train with Chopra, mentioning that he is very talented and passionate about being the best.

Off the pitch, Chopra is humble and down-to-earth. He is thoroughly dedicated to maintaining himself fit and disciplined, something that has been a massive input in his success on the sport's pitch.
