GBS Cases in Maharashtra Surge to 163, Five New Infections Reported in Pune

In Maharashtra, there are now 163 suspected instances of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), and five further cases have been found in Pune. There are now 127 confirmed GBS cases overall, with 163 suspected cases spread throughout Pune, the surrounding districts, and rural areas, including five new detections.

"On Monday, five cases were found, but no fatalities were reported. There are now 127 confirmed cases of GBS. According to an official, of the 163 suspected cases, 32 are from Pune city, 86 are from recently added villages inside the borders of the Pune Municipal Corporation, 18 are from Pimpri Chinchwad, 19 are from Pune rural, and eight are from other districts. Of the 163 patients, 21 are on ventilator support, 47 are in the intensive care unit, and 47 have been released.

Additionally, the Public Health Laboratory received 168 water samples from different areas of Pune city for chemical and biological investigation. Samples taken from eight different water sources showed pollution, according to the research.

GBS is an uncommon condition in which the immune system targets peripheral nerves, resulting in weakening of the muscles, loss of feeling in the arms and/or legs, and trouble breathing or swallowing.Near-total paralysis can result from severe GBS instances. People of all ages can be affected by the disorder, while adults and men are more likely to have it.

In response to the growing number of cases, the Maharashtra Health Department has set up a task force to monitor the situation closely. Hospitals have been instructed to report new cases promptly and ensure the availability of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), the standard treatment for GBS.

Doctors recommend basic hygiene practices to reduce the risk of infections that could potentially trigger GBS. This includes frequent handwashing, consuming safe drinking water, and avoiding contact with individuals showing signs of viral illness.
