Devastating Landslides in Wayanad: 19 Dead, Dozens Missing Amidst Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Massive landslides that struck multiple mountainous areas in Kerala's Wayanad district early on Tuesday have killed at least 19 people, including two children, and are thought to have trapped several more.

Devastating Landslides in Wayanad: 19 Dead, Dozens Missing Amidst Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Heavy monsoon rains triggered a series of landslides in Wayanad district, Kerala, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people. As rescue operations continue, dozens are still reported missing, adding to the mounting distress in the region.

According to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), teams from the Fireforce and National Disaster Response Force have been sent to the affected area, and a second NDRF team is currently on its way to Wayanad.

According to Wayanad district officials, a Nepali family's one-year-old infant drowned in a landslide in Thondernad village. Many people are feared to be stuck, according to locals in the impacted districts. The continuous, intense rain hinders rescue efforts.

In a statement released by his office, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that state ministers would travel to the hilly district to oversee the rescue efforts and that the actions would be coordinated.

"My prayers are with those injured, and my sympathies are with all those who have lost their loved ones," Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on the social networking platform X. Modi continued by saying that he had promised Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, "all possible aid" with the situation.
