From Riches to Renunciation: A Gujarat Couple's Inspiring Journey

In a remarkable display of devotion and inspired by their children, a Jain couple from Gujarat, India, has chosen to renounce their entire fortune of Rs 200 crore (approximately $24 million) and embrace monastic life. Bhavesh Bhandari, a successful businessman, and his wife, residents of Himmatnagar and known for their philanthropic contributions, recently distributed their wealth to charitable causes aligned with their Jain faith.

This life-altering decision wasn't made in a vacuum. The Bhandaris' children, a daughter (19) and son (16), took a similar path in 2022, choosing to become Jain monks themselves. The Jain religion emphasizes non-violence, detachment from worldly possessions, and living an ascetic life. It seems the Bhandari children's dedication to these principles deeply influenced their parents.

News reports suggest Bhavesh himself acknowledged the impact his children's decision had on him. According to a source quoted in the Economic Times, "Bhavesh and his wife were significantly influenced by their children's decision to detach from material possessions and embrace the ascetic lifestyle." Another report, from India Today, suggests that the children's time spent with Jain monks during the COVID-19 lockdown might have also played a role.

Whatever the reasons, the Bhandaris' commitment is complete. In February, they gave away their entire fortune, ensuring it would be used for charitable purposes. Now, they prepare to formally renounce their worldly life at a ceremony later this month. After the ceremony on April 22nd, they will begin their new lives as Jain monks, living with minimal possessions – just two white garments and a bowl for alms. They will sever familial ties and embark on a barefoot journey, following the strictures of Jain monastic life.

The Bhandaris' story is an inspiration, showcasing the power of faith and family. It highlights the core principles of Jainism and the profound impact they can have on individuals' lives. Their decision is a testament to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment, even if it means leaving behind immense wealth and worldly comforts.
