On Tuesday morning, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook the Bay of Bengal, sending shockwaves over Kolkata and sections of West Bengal. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck at 6:10 a.m.

The earthquake was registered close to Puri in Odisha, an official from the India Meteorological Department informed news agency PTI. According to the official, the quake struck the Bay of Bengal at a depth of 91 kilometres. He noted that the tremor was detected near latitude 19.52 N and longitude 88.55 E.

Residents in Kolkata experienced mild shaking, leading to brief concern; however, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Kolkata, situated in Seismic Zone III, faces a moderate risk of earthquakes, with occasional tremors resulting from seismic activities in nearby regions.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, and residents are advised to remain vigilant, especially considering the potential for aftershocks. While today's earthquake was moderate and occurred at a significant depth, reducing its surface impact, it's a reminder of the region's seismic activity.

At 8:42 a.m. on Sunday, a moderately strong earthquake struck the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Although no fatalities or property damage were reported, officials indicated that tremors were felt in several areas of the district.
