Karnataka Bandh Paralyzes State: 144 Flights Affected, Schools Shut in Cauvery Water Dispute Protests

Bengaluru, Karnataka - In a dramatic turn of events, Karnataka has been brought to a standstill as farmer unions and pro-Kannada organizations rallied together to call for a statewide bandh (shutdown) in protest of the Cauvery Regulatory Committee's (CWRC) recent order to release 3000 cusecs of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. The impact of this protest has been far-reaching, affecting everyday life in the state.

Flight Disruptions and School Closures

The bandh, which began early this morning, has had a significant impact on transportation and educational institutions across Karnataka. As many as 144 flights were disrupted at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, causing inconvenience to thousands of travelers. Airlines had to cancel, reschedule, or divert flights due to the limited availability of ground handling services and airport staff.

In addition to flight disruptions, schools and colleges across the state remained closed for the day, affecting the education of thousands of students. The closure of educational institutions was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the ongoing protests.

Kannada Okkuta Leading the Charge

The call for the Karnataka bandh was spearheaded by 'Kannada Okkuta,' a conglomerate of pro-Kannada groups, and farmer unions. They strongly oppose the CWRC's decision to release Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu. This protest comes merely two days after a Bengaluru bandh, which received mixed responses from the public.

Members of 'Kannada Okkuta' and various farmer unions took to the streets in a massive show of strength, leading to roadblocks and disruptions in many parts of the state. Protesters, waving Kannada flags and banners, shouted slogans demanding the withdrawal of the order to release water to Tamil Nadu.

Government Response and Security Measures

In response to the bandh, the Karnataka government has deployed additional police forces across the state to maintain law and order. Security has been heightened, especially in sensitive areas, to prevent any untoward incidents. The government has urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities during this period of unrest.

Impact on Daily Life

The bandh has had a significant impact on daily life in Karnataka. Public transportation services, including buses and trains, were partially disrupted, leading to difficulties for commuters. Shops and businesses in many parts of the state remained closed in support of the protest.

The Way Forward

As the bandh continues throughout the day, the government and protesting organizations are expected to engage in dialogue to address the concerns of the people of Karnataka. The Cauvery water dispute has a long history of triggering tensions between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and finding a sustainable resolution remains a challenge.

The state government will need to balance the demands of its citizens with its obligations under the CWRC's order. Meanwhile, citizens across Karnataka eagerly await a peaceful resolution to this issue, hoping that their daily lives will soon return to normal.
