ECI Rebukes Rahul Gandhi Over Maharashtra Poll Remarks, Calls Allegations Baseless

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a strong rebuttal to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent statements on the Maharashtra election results, calling his claims “unsubstantiated” and lacking in factual backing.

In a rare and pointed statement, the ECI addressed the Opposition leader’s comments made during a public interaction, where he alleged irregularities and manipulation in the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Commission expressed serious concern over what it described as “sweeping statements” that have the potential to undermine public confidence in the democratic process.

"The Commission strongly refutes any baseless insinuations that question the credibility of our election process," the ECI said. It further noted that no formal complaint or evidence has been submitted by Gandhi or the Congress party regarding the alleged malpractice.

Rahul Gandhi, who has been vocal about issues of electoral transparency, had pointed towards what he claimed were "suspicious trends" in vote counting and results declaration. However, the ECI asserted that the entire election process in Maharashtra was conducted in adherence to strict protocols, under full video surveillance, and with representatives of all major parties present at every stage.

Political analysts view the ECI’s statement as a significant moment in the ongoing friction between the Congress party and India's top election body. This episode adds to the growing list of confrontations between opposition parties and the ECI over election procedures and results.

The Commission concluded its statement by urging political leaders to exercise restraint and responsibility, particularly when commenting on constitutional institutions, without evidence to support their allegations.
