Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has been fined and handed a demerit point after the ICC found him guilty of showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during the Tri-Series final.
The International Cricket Council confirmed that Zaman violated Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The breach, categorised under Article 2.8, involves “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.” The issue arose when Zaman reacted aggressively to a decision that led to his dismissal during the final overs of Pakistan’s innings.
Match referee Reon King imposed:
10% fine on his match fee
1 demerit point (his first within a 24-month period)
The charge was filed by the on-field umpires and supported by the third and fourth umpires. Since Zaman immediately accepted the sanction, no hearing was conducted.
Although a Level 1 offence is considered minor, demerit points remain on record for two years. If a player accumulates four or more points, suspension rules apply. For now, the penalty does not affect Zaman’s participation in upcoming matches.
Pakistan went on to win the Tri-Series final, but the incident attracted strong reactions from fans and analysts, adding controversy to the otherwise successful match.
