Arsenio Dominguez, IMO Secretary General visits to Seafarers War Memorial at Indian Sailors Home Society (ISHS), Mumbai

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security, and environmental performance of international shipping. Its primary role is to establish a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair, effective, universally adopted, and universally implemented.

On 19th February 2025, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) visited the Indian Sailors Home Society (ISHS), Mumbai. The IMO Secretary General was given a rousing welcome by thousands of seafarers.

 

During his visit, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez paid homage at the Seafarers War Memorial, recognizing the sacrifices and contributions of Indian seafarers to maritime history. The memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and dedication of sailors who served during times of war. As a mark of respect and remembrance, Mr. Dominguez laid a wreath at the Seafarers War Memorial.


The solemn ceremony honored the lives lost at sea and acknowledged the sacrifices made by seafarers in the line of duty. The IMO Secretary General also visited various facilities at the Indian Sailors Home Society (ISHS), including the TV center, gymnasium, medical center, yoga hall and indoor games zone.


Trainee seafarers from T.S. Rahman presented the IMO Secretary General with a guard of honor. The IMO Secretary General was accompanied by Mr. Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping and Capt. (Dr.) Daniel J. Joseph, Deputy Director General of Shipping. Mr. Milind Kandalgaonkar, General Secretary-cum-Treasurer of NUSI and Deputy Chairman of ISHS, presented a memento to Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, IMO Secretary General on behalf of the organization.


The IMO Secretary General also addressed the seafarers, emphasizing the importance of their role in global maritime operations and reaffirming the commitment of IMO to their welfare and professional growth.
