What an individual chooses to wear is completely a personal choice. Whether one wants to wear a hijab or not should be an individual’s choice rather that anyone dictating it to them.
On Friday, December 22, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the state government would lift the prohibition on the hijab. The dispute around the hijab in schools and other educational institutions began almost two years ago in the state.
The chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, declared that the state's educational institutions would not forbid the hijab. He stated that the government directive is on its way and that the officials have received instructions.
The dispute surrounding the hijab initially surfaced in January of last year, following six students from Government Pre-University (PU) College in Udupi accusing the administration of preventing them from entering the campus while wearing the hijab. After being turned away from the institute, the Muslim girls staged protests outside.
In reaction, a number of Hindu students began showing up to class in saffron shawls at various educational establishments.
The Karnataka High Court upheld the executive decision on March 15, 2018, ruling that Islamic law does not require the wearing of the hijab. The students moved the Supreme Court, and it rendered a divided decision. A broader bench is scheduled to hear the case.
