DGCA to Direct Airlines to Check Fuel Switches After Air India Express Crash Probe Findings

India's aviation regulator DGCA is set to instruct airlines to inspect aircraft fuel control switches following revelations from the Air India Express crash investigation.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is preparing a nationwide advisory or directive to all Indian carriers in the wake of critical findings from the Air India Express accident probe. The preliminary investigation suggested that a misconfigured or malfunctioning fuel control switch could have been a contributing factor in the engine failure incident.

The DGCA is likely to recommend a mandatory inspection of fuel shutoff and control switches on aircraft to ensure proper functioning and standardization of procedures across fleets. The move comes as part of broader efforts to improve aviation safety standards in India following recent accidents and near-miss events.

The Air India Express aircraft involved in the crash reportedly experienced a loss of thrust shortly after takeoff, and investigators discovered that incorrect fuel lever settings may have played a key role. This technical lapse, if verified, points toward a potential gap in pre-flight checks or crew familiarity with aircraft systems.

Aviation experts say such an inspection directive is a proactive step, highlighting DGCA’s intent to prevent similar occurrences by ensuring mechanical and procedural compliance.

A DGCA official, speaking anonymously, emphasized that while the investigation is still underway, the regulator is taking early lessons seriously. The upcoming circular is expected to include detailed guidelines on inspection, maintenance, and flight crew training regarding fuel switches.

The Air India Express crash, which tragically resulted in fatalities, has prompted national discussion on aviation safety readiness and regulatory oversight.

With increasing scrutiny on aircraft health monitoring systems and flight crew protocols, this directive may be the first in a series of preventive regulations in the coming months.
