Online Gaming Bill Gets President Murmu's Assent, Officially Becomes Law

Online Gaming Bill receives President Murmu’s assent, officially becoming law to regulate and monitor the online gaming sector in India.

The move marks a significant step by the government in addressing concerns related to online gaming, ranging from consumer safety to fair practices in the fast-growing digital gaming industry.

The new law seeks to establish a regulatory framework for online gaming platforms, ensuring transparency, fair play, and protection of players’ interests. It also aims to curb illegal betting and gambling activities often disguised as gaming, thereby providing a clear legal distinction between skill-based gaming and games of chance.

Under the legislation, the government will set up a central regulatory authority to oversee compliance by online gaming companies. Provisions include mandatory registration of platforms, age-appropriate safeguards for young players, and strict penalties for companies violating guidelines.

The bill has been welcomed by several stakeholders in the gaming industry, who see it as an opportunity to legitimize operations and attract investments. However, critics argue that excessive regulation could stifle innovation and burden startups in the sector.

With India witnessing exponential growth in the digital gaming market, the enactment of the Online Gaming Bill is seen as a landmark development. It not only seeks to balance economic opportunities with consumer protection but also places India among nations that are actively working on creating responsible gaming ecosystems.
