India’s Ministry of External Affairs firmly denied former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that India pledged to halt oil imports from Russia, asserting that no such commitment was made.

The MEA emphasized that India maintains an independent foreign policy guided by national interests, especially concerning its energy security.

The controversy arose after Trump suggested that India had agreed to stop importing oil from Russia, following the ongoing tensions between Western nations and Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. However, Indian officials quickly clarified that such statements were “factually incorrect” and not reflective of India’s position.

India has repeatedly stated that it will continue purchasing oil from Russia to ensure affordable energy for its population, citing economic and strategic imperatives.
