New Delhi: India recorded 743 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, with seven reported fatalities. The World Health Organization has categorized the JN.1 variant as of 'special concern' due to its swift transmission, although it is deemed to pose a 'low' risk to global public health. The Health Ministry disclosed this information on Saturday, highlighting a surge in infections attributed to cold weather and the emergence of a new coronavirus variant. Notably, the daily case count had previously dropped to double digits by December 5
In the last 24 hours, Kerala reported three Covid-19 fatalities, Karnataka recorded two, and Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu each reported one death. The recent uptick in infections is attributed to both colder temperatures and the emergence of a new coronavirus variant. Notably, by December 5, daily cases had dropped to double digits.
The national recovery rate stands at an impressive 98.81 percent. Over the course of almost four years from the beginning of 2020 to now, India has seen over 4.5 crore Covid-19 infections, resulting in more than 5.3 lakh deaths. However, the Health Ministry reports that over 4.4 crore people have successfully recovered. The ongoing anti-Covid-19 vaccination campaign has administered 220.67 crore doses, according to ministry data.
While the World Health Organization has flagged the JN.1 variant as of 'special concern' due to its rapid spread, it is deemed to pose a 'low' risk to global public health. The Central Government has urged states and union territories to stay vigilant amid the rising number of Covid cases and the confirmed presence of the JN.1 sub-variant.
