Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with the newly elected President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, in New Delhi today. The high-level meeting marks the first official visit of President Muizzu to India since his victory in the September elections, setting the stage for a fresh phase of cooperation between the two neighboring nations.

Discussions between the leaders focused on strengthening bilateral ties, with particular emphasis on regional security, economic collaboration, and infrastructure development. India and the Maldives, both key players in the Indian Ocean region, have enjoyed a traditionally strong relationship, and today's meeting aimed to reaffirm that commitment amid a changing geopolitical landscape.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated President Muizzu on his election victory and reiterated India’s commitment to the Maldives’ growth and prosperity. “India will continue to stand by the Maldives as a reliable partner in its journey of development and progress,” Modi stated during a joint press briefing following the meeting.

One of the major focal points of the discussions was regional security, especially in light of the growing maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean. Both leaders underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region, with Modi offering continued support to the Maldives in bolstering its maritime security capabilities. This includes ongoing training and assistance to the Maldivian defense forces under the broader framework of defense cooperation agreements.

On the economic front, Modi and Muizzu discussed expanding cooperation in trade, tourism, and renewable energy. The Maldives, a popular destination for Indian tourists, has been a vital partner in India's "Neighbourhood First" policy, and both leaders agreed to explore new avenues to enhance economic ties further.

President Muizzu, whose election campaign was centered on reducing dependence on India, emphasized his commitment to maintaining a balanced and mutually beneficial relationship with all global powers. However, his visit signals a positive shift in affirming the Maldives' long-standing bond with India. “Our ties with India remain one of our most important relationships, and we look forward to continued collaboration in areas that benefit both our countries,” Muizzu said during the meeting.

The meeting between PM Modi and President Muizzu is being seen as a critical moment in the evolving India-Maldives relationship. With both leaders expressing optimism for the future, this diplomatic engagement is expected to lay the groundwork for enhanced cooperation on multiple fronts, further strengthening the ties between the two countries in the years to come.
