New York City’s World Trade Center Illuminates in Vibrant Lights to Celebrate Diwali 2024

This Diwali, New York City joined the global celebration of the Festival of Lights by lighting up one of its most iconic structures the World Trade Center. As the skyline glowed against the evening sky, the festive lights at the World Trade Center offered a stunning tribute to the thousands of residents celebrating Diwali across the city.

This year's lighting ceremony, organized in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in New York and various cultural organizations, marked one of the most vibrant celebrations of Diwali in the city. The event drew crowds from different cultural backgrounds, mphasizing the diverse, multicultural spirit that defines New York City. More than 600 well-known Indian Americans attended US President Joe Biden's Diwali celebration at the White House on Monday. In his admiration, Joe Biden emphasised the significance of Diwali and said that it is "proudly celebrated at the White House today."

The celebration is part of New York City’s increasing recognition of cultural festivals. Recently, Diwali was declared an official holiday for New York City public schools, acknowledging the significance of the festival for the city’s large Indian diaspora. Mayor Eric Adams, who played a key role in this decision, stated at the lighting ceremony, "Diwali’s message of light and hope is universal, and New York City is proud to celebrate this beautiful festival with our Indian communities and with the world."

This year’s event was more accessible than ever, with live streams allowing viewers globally to experience the Diwali lighting from the comfort of their homes. Many participants shared messages of joy and solidarity online, expressing appreciation for the recognition of a festival so deeply rooted in their heritage. For some, seeing the World Trade Center as a symbol of resilience illuminated in Diwali colors felt particularly poignant, reinforcing the shared values of unity and strength across cultures.

The celebration extended beyond the World Trade Center, with nearby areas such as Times Square hosting Diwali events, food stalls, and traditional music performances. Diwali parades and street events filled neighborhoods, while city landmarks like the Empire State Building also joined in, echoing a celebration that embraced the entire city.
