French Artist Ben Dies by Suicide After Wife's Death
French artist Ben Vautier, known simply as Ben, passed away by suicide at his home in Nice just hours after his wife's death, according to his family's statement on Wednesday. The famed artist was 88 years old.
Ben's wife, Annie, passed away at the age of 80 on Wednesday after suffering a stroke earlier in the week. "Unwilling and unable to live without her, Ben killed himself a few hours later at their home," said their children, Eva and Francois, in a statement.
The couple, who had been married for 60 years, were deeply devoted to each other. Ben's family statement reflects the immense grief he felt after Annie's passing.
Ben was a renowned artist associated with the Fluxus movement, known for challenging traditional art forms. He was famous for his use of painted slogans that often conveyed philosophical or humorous messages.
The Nice prosecutor's office confirmed that Ben was found with a gunshot wound and that an investigation into his death is underway.
