Vinesh Phogat's campaign for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris has been remarkable but disappointing. What should have been a turning point in her career turned into a limping finish. Antil Panghal had to lose 50kg to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, Yui Sasaki, the reigning champion, faced Vinesh in his first match and lost only three matches to him since 2010.
The Japanese wrestler also won gold in Tokyo 2020 without giving up a single point. The wrestler from India seemed to be facing an insurmountable task, but Lady Luck had other ideas. With less than 40 seconds left, Vinesh overcame a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 in spectacular fashion that brought him to tears. In the semi-finals, she easily overcame Yusneylys Guzman from Cuba, in the quarter-finals she defeated Oksana Livach from Ukraine. A tragedy happened before the match for gold, at least silver was tipped. Vinesh was disqualified during the weigh-in for the finals as he was 100 grams overweight. After being shocked by the verdict, she announced her resignation and appealed to the CAS.
Moreover, the CAS decision did not support it. The Economic Times claims that Vinesh's performance in Paris attracted the attention of the entire country and that the price of her support has gone up significantly. Before Paris 2024, he reportedly charged ₹25 lakh for each endorsement deal; it now reportedly charges between ₹75,00,000 and ₹1 crore for a single brand. Vinesh was also given a warm welcome on his return to India. As she traveled to her village, Balali, khap panchayats and a number of his fans celebrated him. As she left the IGI airport, hundreds of admirers waited to greet her to the sounds of dhol.
