Seattle on Tuesday night, the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-2 thanks to Shane Bieber's second consecutive six-point shutout inning. Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner, threw 55 of 83 pitches for strikes, striking out nine and walking no one. He gave up six hits and did not strand any runners behind second base. During his final season before becoming a free agent, the 28-year-old right-hander gave up 10 hits in 12 innings while striking out 20 and walking one.
Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth to earn his second save. Luis Castillo allowed four runs and ten hits over five and a third innings before Bo Naylor crushed a two-run home run in the fifth. With a 6.75 ERA, Castillo gave up 16 hits and eight runs in 10 2/3 innings of work. After two games in the series, Naylor is 4 for 7. After third baseman Josh Rojas threw across first base to allow Brian Rocchia to score, Tyler Freeman hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to give the team a 5-0 lead. In the fourth, Will Brennan had an RBI single. In the fifth, Steven Kwan singled.
In the bottom, Rojas scored on a ground ball and J.P. Crawford also scored on a ground ball. Cleveland: LHP manager Stephen Vogt said that while Sam Hentges has yet to throw a bullpen session, he will in the coming days. R.H. Gavin Williams is expected to visit Arizona's practice facility after Monday's bullpen workout.
