Vice-up 2014 Led by seasoned opener Shikhar Dhawan, Punjab Kings will look to launch an unexpected bid for the Indian Premier League title in 2024. In the IPL 2023 points standings, the Mohali-based team was placed eighth and four points outside the playoffs.
In the 2023 Indian Premier League, PBKS had a strong start, winning six and losing eight of their 14 matches. In 16 seasons of the IPL, this was the 14th time that the Punjab Kings had missed the playoffs.
With the new stadium, PBKS will look to reverse their IPL results. In fact, along with Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, they are one of only three original teams to never take home an IPL championship.
To win the crown in 2024, Punjab Kings will depend on their solid foundation of English players. England all-rounder Sam Curran has become the most expensive player in IPL history in the 2023 auction with the Preity Zinta-owned franchise. However, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc broke this record in the 2024 mini-overs. Curran finished the previous season with 276 runs and 10 wickets, but the team management will be looking for more from their best player in the 2024 Indian Premier League.
They also have hard-hitting Liam Livingstone in their ranks and will expect him to perform well in the 2024 season despite his lackluster IPL 2023 campaign. Livingstone, who amassed 279 runs in the previous season, will be looking to replicate his 2022 performance which included four fifties in 14 matches and 437 runs at a strike rate of 182.08.
PBKS also paid Rs 4.20 crore for the services of veteran auctioneer Chris Woakes in the mini-auction of 2024. With his ability to bowl both sides, the all-rounder can provide Punjab with a reliable powerplay option and prove to be a very useful batting option further down the order .
