On Day 6 of the Paris Paralympics 2024, Indian Para-Athletes Shine with Five Medals, bringing India's medal tally to 20

Following Deepthi Jeevanji's bronze in the women's 400m T20, India finished on the podium twice in the Paralympic events: once in the men's javelin F46 and once in the high jump T63.

On Day 6 of the Paris Paralympics 2024, Indian Para-Athletes Shine with Five Medals, bringing India's medal tally to 20

In a remarkable display of determination and athleticism, Indian para-athletes clinched five medals in a dramatic late evening rush at the ongoing Paralympic Games. This latest achievement underscores India's growing prominence in the international para-sports arena, as the nation continues to produce world-class athletes who consistently perform at the highest levels.

Indian track and field athletes earned five medals at the Paralympic Games in Paris on Tuesday, including silver and bronze in the men's high jump (T63) and javelin throw (F46), after Deepthi Jeevanji's bronze in the women's 400m T20 category.

In the men's T63 high jump competition, Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu brought home silver and bronze, respectively, while in the F46 javelin throw final, Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar finished second and third, respectively.

The 29-year-old Thangavelu's best jump was 1.85 meters, while the 32-year-old Kumar cleared 1.88 meters. The gold went to American Frech Ezra, the world record holder. Thangavelu and Kumar are both T42 athletes with similar disabilities or a single above-the-knee amputation.

Deepthi, the world champion from India, finished the women's 400-meter T20 category final race with a bronze medal, just missing her fastest time.  Deepthi, who turns 21 later this month, finished in 55.82 seconds, behind world record holder Aysel Onder (55.23) of Turkey and Yuliia Shuliar (55.16 seconds) of Ukraine.  The T20 division is designed for athletes with mental illnesses.

This evening's achievements further solidify India's status as a powerhouse in para-sports. The five medals won today add to an already impressive tally, reflecting the athletes' dedication and the support they receive from their coaches, families, and the nation.

As the Paralympic Games continue, all eyes will be on the Indian contingent to see what other feats of excellence they will achieve. With performances like those witnessed tonight, there is no doubt that more success stories are on the horizon.
