Former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath said the bowlers should take the initiative and change the unfair balance of the game in favor of the hitters, especially in the shorter format. Before the bowlers caught up with the new deliveries and leveled the playing field, the hitters made the most progress when the IPL got underway. However, hitters have recently won the game with fresh, creative shots. So McGrath, who is currently at the MRF Pace Foundation for his annual coaching session, said it was time for the bowlers to stand up.
It all boils down to mental processes, strategy and control. A bowler will be successful and control the game if he can bowl the delivery he wants.
I believe that nowadays in T20 cricket, depending on what the batsmen do in the last moments of the game, you have to keep a few balls in mind while bowling. So they have to innovate a bit more," the 54-year-old continued.
All eyes will be on Australian quicks Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins with the IPL starting in a few days. Both fetched record prices at the auction and McGrath considered Starc one of the best in the shortest format. It seems to fit the condensed version. The Aussie great remarked: "He's aiming such attacking lines and lengths if the ball is moving."
