During the ongoing Boxing Day Test match against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Jasprit Bumrah accomplished a stunning record on Sunday: he became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 Test wickets. On Day 4, he achieved the milestone after taking four wickets in Australia's opening innings and dismissing Travis Head for one in their second innings. This was his 200th Test wicket in just 44 Test matches.
With this milestone, Bumrah joins an exclusive club of bowlers who have already achieved 200 wickets in 44 games, including as Pat Cummins and Kagiso Rabada.
Bumrah became the fastest Indian to attain 200 wickets in terms of balls bowled as he made his 8484th legal delivery in Test cricket. After 9896 deliveries, Mohammed Shami achieved the same milestone, but he was surpassed by him. In all, Bumrah has surpassed Waqar Younis (7725 balls), Dale Steyn (7848 balls), and Kagiso Rabada (8154 balls) as the fourth-fastest bowler to get 200 wickets.
Notably, Bumrah became the first bowler in history to take 200 wickets with a sub-20 average, achieving this feat with an incredible bowling average of 19.56. The West Indies great Joel Garner, who previously held the record by giving up 4067 runs, was surpassed by him when he reached the milestone in the longest format with just 3912 runs gave up.
Renowned for his unique bowling action, searing pace, and pinpoint accuracy, Bumrah has been a vital cog in India’s cricketing resurgence, particularly in overseas Test matches. Since his debut in January 2018, Bumrah has consistently delivered match-winning performances, becoming a nightmare for batsmen around the world.
Cricketing greats and fans alike have lauded Bumrah's achievement. Former Indian captain Virat Kohli praised him on social media, calling him "a generational talent and a true champion."
