Prime Minister Narendra Modi today dedicated India's first vertical lift sea bridge in Rameswaram, a milestone in the development of the country's infrastructure. The modern bridge, replacing the century-old Pamban railway bridge, will revolutionize connectivity between the Indian mainland and Rameswaram Island.
The recently constructed vertical lift bridge that is about 2.05 kilometres in length has state-of-the-art technology whereby the middle section can be lifted vertically to enable ships to pass underneath it—the first of its kind in Indian railway engineering. Withstanding rough marine conditions, the bridge is an engineering wonder, marrying modern design with ecological friendliness.
At the inaugural ceremony, PM Modi emphasized how crucial the project is in facilitating tourism, supporting local economy, and enhancing the lives of people of Tamil Nadu."By connecting the hallowed city with Dehradun, this bridge symbolizes New India's vision—sustainable, inclusive, and innovative progress. It shall be a pilgrim-changer, tourist-changer, business-changer, too," he said.
The new bridge replaces the historic 100-year-old Pamban Bridge, India's first sea bridge and lifeline to the region.Even though the old bridge had been in service for over a century, its limited capacity and age required it to be upgraded. The vertical lift scheme not only permits free movement of trains but also marine traffic, which is essential for trade and defence.
Indian Railways and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) built the bridge with electro-mechanical systems and remote control features. The bridge is one part of the broader push by the government towards revamping national infrastructure under the "PM Gati Shakti" scheme.
Rameswaram, which is among the Char Dham shrines, welcomes lakhs of pilgrims every year. The hassle-free rail connectivity provided by the new bridge will give a major fillip to spiritual tourism and local hospitality and trade business.
Within days of the inauguration, social media was filled with photos and videos of the first vertical lift demonstration of the bridge.Tourists, social media influencers, and individuals praised the engineering wonder and celebrated travelling to Rameswaram via the new wonder.
The inauguration of India's first vertical lift sea bridge is not merely an infrastructural achievement—it's a symbol of progress, bridging the past and the future. As Rameswaram bring in this new era of connectivity, the bridge rises—literally and figuratively—as a culmination of India's emerging technology.
