India-Pakistan tensions have drastically spiked following the fatal terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians. In the recent development, Pakistan breached the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam and Uri sectors, which triggered a fierce retaliation by the Indian Army.
Pakistani troops fired unprovoked small arms along the LoC, targeting opposite Tutmari Gali in Nowgam and Rampur sector in Uri, as per official sources. Indian Army retaliated with "effective and heavy retaliation," confirmed military officials.
The Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 in the popular Baisaran meadow was targeted mainly at tourists. The probe into the attack has now officially been taken up by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) after directions were received from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
In retaliation for the attack and follow-up ceasefire violations, India has imposed strict action against Pakistan:
•Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
•Closure of the Attari border check post.
•Revocation of all Pakistani visas with the exception of diplomatic, official, and long-term visas.
Pakistan, for its part, has shut its airspace to Indian carriers and put bilateral trade on hold. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared that the nation's military is "ready to defend its sovereignty," while also making an offer for a "neutral investigation" of the Pahalgam incident.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri categorically denounced Pakistan's move, warning that Islamabad will be "brought to its knees" and declaring India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will see to it that there are repercussions for this "despicable act."
Security operations have also increased in Jammu and Kashmir. Anantnag police, along with the Army, CRPF, and other forces, have conducted large-scale search and cordon operations. Security forces have allegedly destroyed the houses of three terrorists in the valley, and nine terrorist houses have been destroyed so far.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are also being made, with nations such as Iran and Saudi Arabia offering to mediate between India and Pakistan to ease tensions.
With the situation still volatile, authorities are keeping developments under close watch, with the Indian government determined to take effective action against terrorism from across the border.
