Kerala Temple Fireworks Tragedy: Over 150 Injured, 8 Critical in Veerarkavu Blast

On Monday, a fireworks explosion happened during a temple festival in Neeleswaram in Kasaragod, Kerala injured over 150 persons, including eight severely. The mishap took place during a ritual fireworks display, a long-standing tradition associated with the temple’s annual festival, drawing thousands of devotees and spectators from across the state.

Local authorities, including fire and rescue teams, arrived swiftly on the scene. Medical teams also worked promptly, transporting critically injured individuals to nearby hospitals, where emergency services had been prepared for mass casualty situations. According to officials, the eight critically injured individuals suffered severe burns and require intensive medical care.

Numerous hospitals in Kasargod, Kannur, and Mangaluru have received the injured. The disaster is thought to have happened when a fireworks storage facility next to Veerarkavu Temple caught fire. The report further stated that the tragedy happened at around midnight.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed concern and extended condolences to those affected, promising strict action against any lapses in safety protocols. "This is a tragic event, and we are committed to supporting the victims and investigating the causes. Festivals should be a source of joy, not despair," he said. Authorities have since halted all fireworks displays in the region until safety checks are enforced.

Early investigations suggest that a possible misfire caused an explosive chain reaction, resulting in the rapid spread of flames. Although safety protocols were reportedly in place, officials are investigating whether any lapses led to the accident. The Veerarkavu temple festival committee has expressed sorrow and is cooperating with authorities.
