On Saturday, a serious disaster happened at Kannauj railway station when a ceiling slab of a structure that was still under construction abruptly collapsed. It is believed that a number of labourers and railway employees were buried beneath the rubble. Immediately, a rescue effort was initiated, and those who were hurt were sent to the hospital. There were about 40 people on the scene, and 23 of them have already been rescued.
Five individuals have been referred to Lucknow for treatment after suffering severe injuries. They will also receive ₹2.5 lakh in financial aid from the Uttar Pradesh government, while those with minor injuries will receive ₹50,000.
A two-story structure was being built as part of the Amrit Bharat initiative to refurbish the station. While the ceiling slab was being laid in the early hours of the morning, the structure collapsed. Locals hurried to the scene in a state of fear following the catastrophe, but they were unable to assist because of the heavy debris. Rescue and relief efforts involved teams from the local police, SDRF, GRP, and RPF.
Railway officials have launched an inquiry into the incident to determine the cause of the collapse. Preliminary findings suggest that the slab, part of the station’s decades-old structure, may have weakened over time due to poor maintenance and exposure to weather conditions.
Train services at Kannauj station have been temporarily suspended, and passengers are being rerouted to nearby stations. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area until the rescue and recovery operations are complete.
The incident has sparked concerns about the condition of aging infrastructure at railway stations across the country, with many calling for urgent upgrades and regular inspections to ensure passenger safety.
