Early on Thursday morning, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Assam's Morigaon district, sending shockwaves into Guwahati and other regions of the state. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred 16 km below the surface at 2:25 a.m.
"EQ of M: 5.0, On: 27/02/2025 02:25:40 IST, Lat: 26.28 N, Long: 92.24 E, Depth: 16 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam," the NCS stated on X. Due to its location in one of India's most seismically active regions, Assam experiences earthquakes frequently. Because it is located in Seismic Zone V, there is a significant chance of experiencing powerful earthquakes.
Residents of Guwahati and nearby areas reported feeling strong vibrations, with some rushing out of their homes and offices in panic. However, no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage have emerged. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and disaster management teams have been put on alert.
Massive earthquakes have occurred in the area throughout the years, including the Assam-Tibet earthquake in 1950 (8.6 magnitude) and the Shillong earthquake in 1897 (8.1 magnitude), both of which rank among the biggest in recorded history.
This comes only days after an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck the Bay of Bengal, sending shockwaves over Kolkata and areas of West Bengal. The earthquake happened on February 25 around 6:10 a.m., according to the NCS.
