Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday took Sheikh Sajahan, the prime accused in the Sandeshkhali violence case, into custody following a High Court order. The CID handed over Sajahan to the CBI at 4.15 pm. Earlier, the CID had taken Sajahan to SSKM Hospital for medical examination.
The High Court had on Wednesday ordered the CBI to grant Sajahan's custody. The court had said Sajahan's custody was necessary for the CBI probe.
The CBI, after taking Sajahan into custody, said it would conduct a thorough probe into the matter. The CBI said it will interrogate Sajahan and try to identify others involved in the case.
Sajahan was arrested on March 2. He is accused of killing BJP worker Bhadu Sheikh in Sandeshkhali on February 22.
CM Mamata Banerjee also demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter. He said that there should be a fair investigation into the matter.
The CBI, after taking Sajahan into custody, said it would conduct an impartial investigation into the case. The CBI said it will not succumb to any political pressure and will bring out the truth.
Background of the case
On February 22, BJP worker Bhadu Sheikh was shot dead in Sandeshkhali. In this case, the police arrested Sheikh Sajahan.
Sajahan's arrest had triggered a war of words between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. The Trinamool Congress had alleged that the BJP worker was murdered.
The BJP had alleged that Trinamool Congress workers killed Bhadu Sheikh.
