The Sambhal Lok Sabha seat came into existence in 1977, the first elections were held in the country after the Emergency and then Chaudhary Charan Singh's party won from here. The Congress won the seat in 1980 and 1984, followed by the Janata Dal in 1989 and 1991. In 1996, Bahubali DP Yadav captured this seat on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket.
